Automatically marks message as read and desktop notification or lack thereof

I notice this quite often, the notifications are inconsistent, sometimes I will get a notification on the phone and when I dont read it I expect to see a notification on the desktop app, but there is none. Testing this with a friend they said that when Depecher is running it automatically marks the message as read.

Basically the telegram app will notify on the desktop first and if not seen or read, it sends the message to the phone. Anyone else have this problem?

Oh good point. So yes Chat is opened but I am using a different application. Or I have the screen locked. Same in terms of cover mode, which I presume is what is considered to be in place when the device is asleep or if I am in a different application and Depecher is still opened.
