Auto-load behaviour is confusing

The new auto-loading of notifications means that I have a mix of read and unread notifications. I used to be able to hit G+A to reload the notifications and go back to top but G+E keeps me at the current location, in the list of already read notifications.

I've also seen the notifications get out of order, so J can jump a notification and then another J goes back up to it.

I've found it a little confusing too. I like that it polls for new ones, but I agree that I find it odd that the old ones don't go away.

I think we need to figure out if notifications should be like email (they stick around until you explicitly dismiss them), or something more transient where they go away sometime after you view them. I'm a little torn. The email pattern is time-tested and works well for people. But half the reason I build this is because I hate email.

Anyone have any brilliant insights?
