Extremely high memory usage on macOS

Open turtlebasket opened this issue 2 years ago • 15 comments

Steps To Reproduce

  1. Open Bitwarden
  2. Wait a while & check Activity Monitor

Expected Result

Acceptable/average memory usage range for an electron app

Actual Result

1-2GB memory usage after running for several days - weeks

Screenshots or Videos

Usage when running for a long time: bw_memory_usage

Usage when restarted: bw_memory_usage_normal

Additional Context

Usage is reduced to normal levels after a restart. Periodically restarting is fine, but probably not a viable solution for users who minimize Bitwarden to the taskbar.

Operating System

macOS

Operating System Version

11.6 Big Sur

Installation method

Direct Download (from bitwarden.com)

Build Version

1.31.3

Issue Tracking Info

Thanks for investigating!

This is probably very similar if not the same to #1770

Any updates on this @Adedamola-Aina?

Could be, although it's an issue with the electron client on macOS in this case - not sure what's causing the issue

@turtlebasket One thing that caught my attention in the report is the usage of version 1.31.3 which is over a year old. Does this behaviour still occur on a recent version 2023.4

Yes

This is still a problem. I noticed having had BitWarden running for a few days it slowly crept up to 800MiB which seems fairly excessive for an application hidden in the menu bar that I'm not interacting with. The most interaction I have with the desktop application is using biometric unlocking in the browser which is tied to the desktop client being installed.

I can confirm that this problem persists to this day. I'm using the Bitwarden MacOS application and Firefox extension (I also have Bitwarden CLI installed).

Can confirm still a problem. I came here to see if this was a known issue after finding bitwarden consuming over 1.4GB and restarting it.

Same here. Was trying to see if this is fixed. But looks like it's still a problem. I have Brave browser with extension and then the desktop app.

this issue already exist since 2021 and still not solved? Just asking, is it possible the developer ship different version of software than in this repo and put something in this software to freely use our computer resources for something fishy? 🤔

We would like to confirm if users are still experiencing high memory usage on macOS. We have been making continual improvements with an eye toward performance and would like to assess whether these have been helpful.

I haven't noticed high memory usage for quite a while now. Thanks!

treyd3 avatar Jun 19 '25 20:06 treyd3

Same here- usage is hovering around 95MB for me. Can probably close if there's agreement about this

turtlebasket avatar Jun 19 '25 20:06 turtlebasket

Thank you for your feedback! We will be closing this. If you experience this again please feel free to create a new issue or re-open this one.
