Bitwarden does not prompt to save or update credentials
Describe the Bug
We are aware of many sites' login forms where the Bitwarden browser extension either on a single platform/browser or multiple will not prompt the user to save a new password or update an existing password. This is something the Bitwarden team is actively working on but need your help as a community and active Bitwarden users!
Expected Result
When you enter new credentials into a login form, or register for a new user account on a site, you should be automatically prompted to save those credentials upon submission by the Bitwarden browser extension. When you update your password on a site and you have a matching login in your vault, you should be automatically prompted to update those credentials upon form submission.
Actual Result
This works most of the time, but not always and it can depend on many, many factors. Some sites simply don't work, some don't work consistently and others who knows. This is what we're aiming to fix!
Call to Action
Below is a link to a Google Form that we have created for capturing information that will help us track down all of these login pages and registration forms where Bitwarden has failed to prompt you to save those credentials. You may submit as many as you like, just please help us help you and the community by providing meaningful information and only those sites/pages where it legitimately doesn't work.
Report failure of prompt to save credentials
If you've been sent to this issue because another issue you had open was closed as a duplicate, thank you for taking the time to submit the issue to us, however we truly need to track this under a single item in aggregate fashion so we can manage it holistically and ensure we're taking broad measures that will improve this behavior with the maximum benefit to all. Please consider using the linked form above to submit the prior sites you had reported in the issue closed.
Not saving when creating a Ubisoft account with Chrome extension.
#1639
failure of prompt to save credentials:
-I just moved from Lastpass, (where the functionality never fail in more then 7 years)
-in bitwarden I was NEVER prompted to save a new pass.
-So I thing it is a problem of bitwarden and not of "specific sites"...
-For a password manager, this is not a "side" funtionality failing.... this is a must have, core functionality: automatically save new password.
-I moved to bitwarden, as many did in last months, but, for the moment, I am quite disappointed.
...but still optimistic!
please, fix it soon!
last fail?.... registering to this website to post my comment! ;-)
I'm coming from lastpass too.
The detection of changed/created password does not work at all, nowhere.
And the last fail was to the community site of Bitwarden...
It is not so bad - it works sometimes. But indeed for me too more often not than yes. Compared to Lastpass it is much worse (I had some sites in LP it failed too). But in LP it was very rare when in Bitwarden is massive.
I hope that it will improve in the future - as somebody who already has all passwords stored it is not something I need daily so it is bearable.

The best outcome when updating a password is that it asks to store a new account. Most of the time it doesn't register it at all. I never had any issues with Lastpass. I hope that the influx of new premium subscribers gives the devs the possibility to improve this crucial functionality.
I have noticed that it asks to create new site when e.g. stored URL is http://mysite.com vs. actual one being https. This is definitely something password manager should handle better.
Just switched from LastPass Premium to Bitwarden. I'm a Windows 10/Firefox (latest version) user on multiple PCs. I just updated my password on several sites and was disappointed that I never saw a prompt to update my saved password in the BW vault.
In some cases where he "Save Password" prompt appears, it doesn't hold for enough time to click "Save now". Once the login page disappears, so does the prompt.

I have this happening on various versions of MacOS or Mac OS X and therefore in different versions of Safari. My versions of the OS range from 10.13.6 to 11.2.3 and I'm using both Mac App Store and non-Mac App Store versions of BW on the different machines.
I think that it probably happens in other browsers, too, but I don't use them often enough to record any consistent behaviour.
EDIT: I just went back and read some previous comments. I noticed that some people were indicating the site where their last 'failure to record' the updated password occurred. Mine was on my internet banking site. So fun.
I also encountered this problem today with an internal site, I had a record with an outdated password, I typed in the new password in the password field (so no "special" field) and Bitwarden never said anything about updating the password and when I checked the password afterwards in Bitwarden, it was the old one.
Very disappointed that such a basic feature is missing.
Never ever I get prompt by bitwarden about saving or updating a password. I'm using Brave, not Chrome.
Either I update the PWD manually or they're gone.
@Dylan-86 I'm also on Brave. I get prompts about 30% of the time. It's just enough get me out of the habit of saving every credential manually so that I keep forgetting and losing info. At this point I'd rather just turn the prompts off.
As long as you can submit at least of these sites where that's failing for you guys on Brave it would be appreciated. I personally use Brave and generally do get prompted, and it's not just because I'm biased (or maybe my computer is biased, or the sites I use, etc. 🤷🏻 ), but the extra data for analysis will certainly help. Thanks for the info!
I am on Firefox and it is similar. I still consider BW very solid password manager. I guess for people who moved from other tool it is not obvious as they tend just migrate already existing data and very rarely create new accounts or update passwords. But trying few other solutions I am convinced that BW is the worst one - close to useless in terms of easy "save new credentials" functionality. It is open source and provides solid security - so I am happy to give it long grace period. This ticket clearly shows that issue has been acknowledged at least.
Thanks @cscharf , Indeed I've seen the first prompt a few minutes ago in Brave.
I agree with @kapitainsky , it's a solid solution and I like it, but the automated update of password is way more than just a nice to have.
I'm trying multiple alternatives and I'd like to stick with BW, this is the only missing thing right now, I'd say.
Me personally I could live with it as it is but no way I could recommend it to my family members who are less computer savvy. I will stay put and wait. I bought premium account hoping that it helps with development and one day I can roll it out to all my circle:)
Does this bug also entail the blue bar recognizing that there is a password, but hitting "Save this password" doesn't actually do anything?

In my case the prompt is shown in most cases (not always), but it is definitively not shown if the vault is closed. I would expect the extension to offer me to save the password and then, if the vault is closed, ask for my password or pin to open it.

That's another big annoyance for me. Sometimes I forget that I am not logged in yet and Bitwarden does nothing to remind me to log in in order to save the password.
I log in to a lot of non-production Salesforce instances (they all use the same password because they copy it from production, so I just copy from my pinned production account). I can see in the split second after I paste the password before I hit enter that Bitwarden is offering to save the password, but once it finishes logging me in, no such luck. Lastpass always got it wrong about what account it should be updating, but at least it asked.
not work when I log in the website: https://bitly.com/.
Actually, since I switched to BitWarden a few months ago, this feature has almost never worked.
This feature has not worked since I started using Bitwarden for some months.
Until today, it works for the 1st time
This feature has not worked since I started using Bitwarden for some months, Coincidentally, me too
This feature does not work for me at all.
Bitwarden doesn't offer to store credentials for...Bitwarden. I just tried logging into a locally hosted version, and lastpass offered to store the credentials, but Bitwarden was nowhere to be seen. 😆
I contacted Bitwarden and they say they are working on this. Apparently for some people it works SOME of the time. For me, not at all! Susan {{ _ }}

Sure would be nice if Bitwarden staff would comment on these issues to know we're not just writing into the void. As a long-time LP user this is also kind of a red flag as I consider migrating over to BW and moving my family over as well. While I can certainly go through the super tedious process of manually creating a site and pasting in a newly generated PW every time... this is an absolute deal breaker for my older family members. Surprising that this isn't being treated as a critical bug.
Have this happen randomly so it's really hard to call out when it doesn't happen. But for the most part, I would say it only prompts me maybe 1 out of 10 times. I don't think I've seen it prompt for saving when using iPhone (iOS) and Safari extension on Mac OS Big Sur, and 1 out of 10 times on Microsoft Edge for Windows extension.
I've just started to migrate my passwords from 1PW to Bitwarden. I've never once been prompted to update a password that I've changed on a site which has led me here trying to find a solution - this is fundamental functionality for a password vault. Chrome picks up the change fine, and 1PW did too when i used it.
For info, I exported my passwords from 1PW using their 1pif format which I then imported into Bitwarden. I use Bitwarden on multiple machines, Windows and Mac, as a Chrome extension. I've not been prompted to update a password as of yet and have done this on multiple sites including bitwardens own.
