'Installation Failed' and no further errors shown

An available update is detected, and is succesfully downloaded. When clicking 'update and restart' after the download is complete, the popup merely says 'installation failed'. How may I access further logs to see what is actually going on? I have the checkUpdates() method wrapped in a try block, and no errors are thrown.
