Since it appears that Sound Byte can only be driven by MIDI, you can use the techministry-midirelay module to connect the machine where you are running Sound Byte. I tested it out and it worked ok on macOS (Big Sur) once everything was setup.

Although this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w184FhkFGtM

is focused on integrating with a lighting console, these are the exact steps I followed to get Sound Byte running.

I had never heard of Sound Byte before today and also had never tried out the midirelay module before today, so the video above was key in order to get it running without much pain.

The big thing I had to do was setup the MIDI config in Sound Byte:

https://www.blackcatsystems.com/software/sound_byte/midi_management.html

I just punched in the numbers exactly as they are in the screenshot on that page. The only difference between the screenshot and the latest version of Sound Byte is there is a "Play Next" option at the bottom of the list. I just gave it the value of "41" but I guess you could pick any unused valid value between 0 and 127.

The only action that I used was the "Send Note On" action from midirelay.

Finally, I installed the most recent version of midi-relay:

https://github.com/josephdadams/midi-relay/releases/tag/V2.2.0

On Big Sur, I had to:

  • turn off the firewall
    • I'm running Companion on a different machine, so I had to disable in order for the instance to connect
  • approved security exception for midi-relay-macos
  • approved security exception for jazz-midi

Here's what I ran into with the double approval:

  • started midi-relay-macos
  • went to System Preferences->Security & Privacy->General and saw a midi-relay-macos approval request. Clicked approve.
  • stopped midi-relay-macos
  • started midi-relay-macos
  • went to System Preferences->Security & Privacy->General and saw a jazz-midi approval request. Clicked approve.
  • stopped midi-relay-macos
  • started midi-relay-macos

At this point, midi-relay-macos fully started.

Sorry this is long, but these were the things that I had to do along the way. Once all those checkboxes were checked, it just worked.

As a bonus, Farrago from Rogue Amoeba is also MIDI controlled. Once I had this setup, I started Farrago and was able to quickly start driving it from Companion too.

Thanks... I did go the midi-relay route as well after posting this request and was able to get the midi controls to fire correctly from Streamdeck. Was hoping to control without midi but it works just fine. I have midi-relay set to open with startup so works fine even after reboots.
