Ajax URL data format

Using the AJAX approach for Typeahead and suggestions. I have 2 major problems :

  1. What is the response that is expected from the server URL ? I have tried following options as responses, but they do not show up : ["Alabama is my home town"] OR [{"id": "2", "name": "Alabama is my home town"}]

  2. When user types suggestions, the suggestions show up below. They do not change their direction if the screen size is not sufficient. Hence my suggestions never show up, but they do get listed in DOM.
