For ease of use to the consumer it can be hardcoded by the translation source. For more flexibility the user can choose. I suppose if we consider these as "derivations"...
Couldn't they just toggle on and off the automatic updates? Turning it on should check for an update, once it's downloaded/ready to install, they can just toggle it back off?
It seems many Chromebooks now support Linux apps installation via ".deb" files. Which would also support debian/ubuntu based Linux distros (quite popular).
Toggling "Auto Updates" should show a progress spinner and check for updates immediately on switching to true

I think checking for updates when toggling "auto updates" to `true` would be better than adding a hotkey
