Hmm nothing jumping out in that debug log I'm afraid, but it should update in seconds not minutes so something definitely must have hung there. Are the songs actually updated?...

We're on Java 8 at present, so this will have to wait until (if) we upgrade to 11 or a newer LTS release.

It's not clear to me that this will necessarily make things clearer or less clunky: - With the current behaviour you know that anything you change on the live pane...

Sure, no problem with taking it in principle - the main concern is we don't break anything, beyond that it's a well-known standard that I'm sure would be very useful...
