Public checkbox on data set listing doesn't do anything

Open joelrader opened this issue 7 years ago • 6 comments

Checking a data set as "public" I would assume would make that saved set available to other logged in users, and possible even with anonymous access enabled. However, I can't ever get other data sets to show up in other users' accounts.

Hi @raiderj, ah! No, that feature is just used so that you can use the "link to this data set" option (The button with a link icon on it) to share it with others that way. It doesn't add your data set to anyone else's account.

Got it!

Question then - is there a way to share, or even back up, the data sets? At the moment, I've just copied the appropriate database entries. But, it'd be really nice to have some other way to do this from the GUI. I have several users of an install, and the ability for them to backup and share their data sets would be really handy.

But, for the original issue, some helper text explaining the function of the "public" checkbox would be useful.

Testing public data sets on 3.2.7.... All I get is a blank page that loads from an anonymous user. All of this feels like things aren't being properly saved to the database. I have several instances of Generate Data on the same web server, and none of them have saving issues, except for 3.2.7.

Hey @raiderj sorry for the wait.

Agreed, that'd be a nice feature. But at the moment no, not besides backing up the DB. That's actually a pretty good candidate for a new feature: I'll log it separately.

Hmm let me take a look. Thanks!

Bumping this - still seems to be a bug where linking to a public dataset lands a user on a blank page - at least on the web version (which is denoted as 3.4.0).

Hey @benkeen - Checking in on this bug... I'd love to be able to link to pre-built datasets, but while the "Link to this dataset" button seems to correctly prompt to make the dataset public and create a link (like http://www.generatedata.com/?load=6325), but the link seems to just take me to a blank template rather than the configured dataset.
