you're so close man. come on fork it and submit a patch.

EvanCarroll avatar Dec 30 '15 05:12 EvanCarroll

hmm, I think people should be able to contribute questions without needing to know how to use git/github. Perhaps for the future, we can consider building some UI for submitting questions to a database via the plugin, maybe with an approval flow for admins or something.

I mean, he needs to learn git pull <sh>; git commit -a; git push origin master; and then click on the web PULL REQUEST.

And besides, no one is answering or maintaining these it would be a lot easier if we weren't shifting that work on us. And, we were instead working on the interface.

EvanCarroll avatar Dec 30 '15 06:12 EvanCarroll

Or.. alternatively fork and do the whole thing through the web interface with Github's edit this file in your own fork button. click the button right next to HISTORY.

EvanCarroll avatar Dec 30 '15 06:12 EvanCarroll

I hear you, but if we require users to be web developers to contribute to the question set, that cuts down our potential community involvement by a ton.

Manually copying and pasting some of the questions isn't too hard. Although it's not ideal, I'd definitely prefer to allow anybody to contribute instead of self-selecting our contributors by requiring technical expertise.

benjaffe avatar Dec 30 '15 06:12 benjaffe

That said, instructions on how to fork, etc... could be a good addition to the readme. :)

benjaffe avatar Dec 30 '15 06:12 benjaffe

Hey Ben and Evan, I did actually check out the source via github and can make an effort to learn how it works. I just know from experience that having newbs mucking with a code base comes with risk, and I’m now the newb. My discomfort lies in not knowing enough about the browser interaction to feel confident in my ability to test my changes and blind commits scare the crap out of me. -Shelly (aka Andrea)

I'm just saying clicking the edit this file in your own fork and clicking the button pull request is not a technical limitation in any sense. they have to have to have an account to open an issue which is half way there.

Just to be clear, you don't have to learn a single thing about git to do this. You can do it all through github.

As for the blind commits. We need to run these files through jslint anyway, and add that .thomascl. These are all minor things I'll get done after I get admin on this repo. But, I can see that being a concern. That concern is somewhat mitigated though because I have to test your code before I commit it. You just make it substantially easier to test.

EvanCarroll avatar Dec 30 '15 06:12 EvanCarroll

In that case, I’ll just do my thing (maybe not tonight) and commit my suggested additions. It will only be in seeing the weightings vs real data will I know if they are sensible. I’m not confident. But I’m more of a data junkie than code monkey :)

There's definitely a conceptual hurdle to get over with Git and Github. I worked at Udacity and saw a ton of people struggle with the idea of changes being the "things", rather than files being the "things". Our Git course was pretty long, and didn't go into a lot of depth because the paradigm shift is pretty large.

Questions like, "is my own fork my own project" and "how does my fork talk to your fork" don't have evident answers if you're a newbie to this. And "how do I know it worked" isn't an easy question to answer either if you aren't used to reading JSON.

benjaffe avatar Dec 30 '15 06:12 benjaffe

I opened #158 for this

benjaffe avatar Dec 30 '15 06:12 benjaffe

FWIW, parsing/reading JSON, XML, etc. doesn’t scare me a bit. Putting myself in the position that someone else will tell me that I am a nitwit does.
