Strange spacing for single quotes in xfce4-terminal

I'm seeing issues similar to #59 in xfce4-terminal running under Devuan Ascii.

My fontconfig version (according to apt-cache policy) is 2.11.0-6.7+b1.

I ought to mention that this is with the downloaded version of the fonts (v1.7.6), after manually replacing the existing versions of the fonts within /usr/share/fonts and updating the font cache.

Oddly in Terminator and Sakura there are no issues with single quotes.

I have recently seen the same problem, using the current debian-packaged 1.7.1 with mlterm. I had initially thought it was a problem with the terminal (and started a thread there) because I didn't see it happening in some other terminals.
