icon format requirements

Are there any special requirements for the custom icon flag ? I've tried using standard icons placing them in the directory and using the direct path but I can't seem to get it to work with a custom icon.

I finally got it to work by using this site to export the file into .icns format. Then in finder I right clicked and hit copy, and pasted into the icon properties window....
