DS918 - LAN not showing up after installing SPK on DSM 7

Open boginder opened this issue 3 years ago • 33 comments

Hi,

After following all of the steps and installing the SPK successfully. I'm unable to see the additional LAN show up. I remember on the older DSM, there were a load of settings to input on the Network Settings But I cannot find this information anywhere unfortunately. Is anyone able to help please so I can get this working again.

Thanks

I am using the 918+ with the Club 3D Dongle without any problem. Did you follow the setup instructions? Run the command via ssh after the install fails?

Gensplejs avatar Sep 29 '21 09:09 Gensplejs

Hey Gensplejs,

thanks for coming back to me.

move manger to install the software and the command via ssh. Strangely, no addition lan shows up and the Club 3d dongles I know aren’t functioning due to no lights on them. So strange!

Yeah same here using ds918+ with the club 3D dongle working just fine. I even just updated to DSM 7.0.1-42218, and working as well. Using the 2.15.0-4 version of the driver for dsm 7

Just did a iperf test since updated and all looks good.

Ahhh- I'm not sure why it isn't working. Should I be using a dongle on each side of the cable? i.e 2 dongles? Sorry if I sound like a total noob. I'm just trying to get to the bottom of why it isn't working.

It was working with the two dongles on DSM 6 it's only since the switch over to 7that it doesn't recognise it.

I have one ethernet that goes from my Router to the Mac, the other ethernet that goes from my router to the DS918+ and then a final ethernet that goes from a Club dongle into the back of my DS918+ to another Club dongle on the end into my Mac.

If anyone can let me know if this setup is all good, that'd be amazing.

Thanks

I run mine dongle to dongle - pc to nas. This is different network than my normal pc and nas network..

Are you not seeing the interface available in the nas or your mac? Mine shows up on my 918+ as LAN 3. And I have manually set an IP and mask here. And then do the same on my PC.

You need to do the command listed with the driver to get it work with dsm7

mrjohnpoz avatar Oct 02 '21 09:10 mrjohnpoz

Hi Mrjohnpoz,

I cant see the interface in DSM weirdly, it just showed up as LAN3 on DSM 6 easily just on 7, tried the front and back USB ports. Wrecking my brain cell haha.

Mira all installed and running driver wise, just seems so odd. I must be missing a trick.

boginder avatar Oct 03 '21 07:10 boginder

I forgot to say, I ran the conman as noted with the driver and all that sides working as it allowed the installation. I was actually struggling with that too, but that got sorted in the end.

boginder avatar Oct 03 '21 07:10 boginder

Could you paste the output of dmesg?

bb-qq avatar Nov 13 '21 05:11 bb-qq

Hey Bb-qq, how do I do this please?

boginder avatar Nov 13 '21 07:11 boginder

Just run sudo dmesg in your terminal. I believe you have already set up the terminal in the installation steps.

bb-qq avatar Nov 21 '21 07:11 bb-qq

The latest driver 2.15.0-5 has improved start-up handling, so I expect this issue is fixed at the version. Since I haven't heard back from you, I'm closing this issue, but feel free to reopen it if you still have any problems.

bb-qq avatar Jan 23 '22 02:01 bb-qq

Hi @bb-qq - sorry for the late comeback on this, I still can't get this to work, it's totally me doing something wrong. I ran the dmesg and it came up with loads of errors. Really not sure what to try next. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

boginder avatar Jul 12 '22 14:07 boginder

Are you trying 2.15.0-7 now? I have been running that since it came out and haven't had any issues with it.

mrjohnpoz avatar Jul 12 '22 15:07 mrjohnpoz

I am yes. Since moving to DSM 7, I just can't get it to work.

boginder avatar Jul 12 '22 16:07 boginder

I am currently on 7.1 update 2, looks like update 3 is ready.. Just haven't installed it yet.. Prob tmrw early in the morning when nobody streaming plex.

I don't recall having to do anything special with driver when moving to update 1 or 2..

Have you validated the thing just didn't die - ie have you tried it in another box, like windows machine?

I ran the dmesg and it came up with loads of errors.

What were these errors?

mrjohnpoz avatar Jul 12 '22 18:07 mrjohnpoz

I just pulled the trigger on the update 3, no issues interface came right back up.. Quick upgrade took less than 5 minutes total.

mrjohnpoz avatar Jul 12 '22 18:07 mrjohnpoz

Is there an update 3, I'm still on 1 with no new updates available..

Edit: did a manual DL en install ... 🙏

Sjekke avatar Jul 12 '22 18:07 Sjekke

7.1 Update 2 was released (2022-06-01), update 3 came out on (2022-07-05)

If your not seeing an update in your control panel - you can always just manually download them. Sometime it takes a while for updates to show up in control panel.

mrjohnpoz avatar Jul 12 '22 18:07 mrjohnpoz

So how did your dsm update go? Is it working now? Did you try using the usb nic in another system to validate its working?

mrjohnpoz avatar Jul 13 '22 15:07 mrjohnpoz

Update 3 did go well but I always have to restart the DHCP server on my Synology. My DHCP server starts before my LAN is active. Do you know how to restart the DHCP server in a script? Grts.

Sjekke avatar Jul 13 '22 20:07 Sjekke

@boginder , could you paste the output of dmesg?

bb-qq avatar Jul 30 '22 07:07 bb-qq

apologies, I haven't updated I sdon't think so can do that now as well to 2.15.0-7

boginder avatar Oct 12 '22 10:10 boginder

Why are you posting a dmesg from your apple??

mrjohnpoz avatar Oct 12 '22 12:10 mrjohnpoz

Ahh I thought that's what I'm supposed to do, I'm using a MacBook. Shall I delete the Dmesg?

boginder avatar Oct 12 '22 12:10 boginder

Deleted Dmesg - Could you please advise what I should've done. Apologies @mrjohnpoz Just to recap - I deleted the previous message as I believe it wasn't what I should've posted.

I also apologised for responding months later as II'v been out the country and away from the Synology. I appreciate the help.

boginder avatar Oct 12 '22 12:10 boginder

From MacBook, ssh (using Terminal app) to NAS to run dmesg on NAS itself.

TheS1R avatar Oct 12 '22 12:10 TheS1R

Thanks @TheS1R - Can I just confirm, I type SSH, then the next command is dmesg? Then that is then on my Nas? Sorry, I'm useless with a lot of this.

boginder avatar Oct 12 '22 13:10 boginder

ssh [username]@[IPAddressOfNAS]

Substitute actual values for [username] and [IPAddressOfNAS].

You will be prompted for NAS password.

TheS1R avatar Oct 12 '22 13:10 TheS1R

Thanks @TheS1R - Just got it - Do I paste the whole lot of the dmesg here? I just want to make sure as I meed it up last time. Have logged into the NAS via SSH.

Thanks

boginder avatar Oct 12 '22 13:10 boginder

Yes.
