Recommendation for processors & RAM in Ubuntu VM instance?
We have been using QC Tools on a Windows desktop with 8GB RAM and Intel i5 2.9GHz. Our current project involves checking a large number of mp4 access files that are up to 6 GB each and now QC Tools is slow and glitchy. To solve this, we'd like to try using the Ubuntu version in a VM so we can more easily increase the memory and available cores.
We have not found recommended specs -- does anyone have a suggestion? Or could we have a different problem?
Hi @Sbigelow, welcome to github! I don't think we ever did formal testing to generate recommended specs, though some could be derived from the discussions in open issues. You can reduce the effort of qctools by opening the preferences and disabling filters that you don't use and by setting it to just process the first video track and first audio track. For instance if a file has 16 audio tracks and qctools is set to analyze all of them, then it's a lot of processing. Another approach is to generate the qctools reports with qcli and then use the resulting reports in the qctools gui, see https://github.com/bavc/qctools/blob/4279e94365e1767b6a31c77f7904ca111e034254/README.md#using-qcli.
If you do proceed with a virtual machine where you can experiment with memory and cores, I'd be very interested to hear about your findings.
