Amazon Q plugin for IntelliJ causing IDE hangs/freezes

Open Jitwad opened this issue 10 months ago • 10 comments

Describe the bug Amazon Q Plugin specifically for IntelliJ.

  • Moving an open file to a new window causes the IDE to hang indefinitely. Affects all open IntelliJ windows.

To reproduce

  1. Start IntelliJ with the Amazon Q plugin installed
  2. Open any 2 source files
  3. Move one of them to a new window, by either drag-n-drop or the file/tab context menu.
  4. Within maybe 30 seconds the IDE becomes unresponsive and not acknowledge any interaction.

Expected behavior I should be able to open files in a new window and still use the IDE (multi monitor setup, for example).

Your Environment

  • OS: Win 11 Business
  • JetBrains product: IntelliJ Enterprise
  • JetBrains product version: 2025.1.2 (build #IU-251.26094.121)
  • AWS Toolkit version: 3.76.251
  • JVM/Python version: OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 17.0.2+8-86)

Additional context Opened a ticket with JetBrains initially, was determined to be the Amazon Q plugin based on testing and log details from IntelliJ, so they sent me here.

Tried plugin version 3.77.251 on the same IDE version

  • eventually freezes up the same way, within a minute. I don't even have to open multiple windows.
  • I can trigger a freeze by open up the AWS Toolkit plugin profile selector and switching profiles
  • Only silver lining is the chat window/pane appears to be rendering cleanly under this version

Tried plugin version 3.78.251 on the same IDE version

  • all the same symptoms as above/previous
  • The chat/window pane is buggered again -- poor render, not interactive

I have been experiencing the same hanging/ freezing issue on IntelliJ IDEA CE 2025.1.2 and Amazon Q plugin 3.78.251

  • Closing a tab freezes the IDE
  • Closing the IDE freezes
  • Q Plugin chat does not work and just remains on "Thinking..." state whenever I enter a prompt

I'm having the same problems.

I'm having the same problem. Even the slightest actions can render IDEA non-responsive, like opening a file, closing a project window, or just checking out another branch, etc. Disable all three plugins (Amazon Q, AWS Core, AWS Toolkit) and everything is back to normal.

For posterity, I have tried the following combinations since my last comment...

All on:

IntelliJ IDEA 2025.1.3 (Ultimate Edition)
Build #IU-251.26927.53, built on June 23, 2025
  • Amazon Q 3.85.251 -> Same issues
  • Amazon Q 3.86.251 -> Same issues

This includes, for each install, additionally purging the install dir completely at %USER_DIR%\.aws\amazonq

Just wanted to confirm that this also happens extensively on OSX. It is extremely annoying and renders the IDE virtually unusable.

Still a critical issue. Makes an excellent product almost useless.

Reverted back to Intellij IDEA 2025.1.5.1 and Q 3.94.251, and I don't see it freezes anymore

I’m experiencing the same problem on macOS with PhpStorm 2025.2.5 and plugin version 3.99.252. Seven of my teammates have confirmed it as well. This is a critical issue and is currently blocking us from using the plugin.
