Upgrade to latest Expo SDK?

On iOS with latest version of Expo Go, I get the following message when the application (using npx expo start):

This reports 'Project is incompatible with this version of Expo Go'. This project uses SDK 46.0.0, but this version of Expo Go supports only SDKs 49.0.0 and 50.0.0.

I tried to upgrade but this didn't work for me. Is it possible to upgrade the codebase to resolve this?
