application blur hangs everything

application blur causes the system to hang irreversibly some time after booting, sometimes almost instantaneously, sometimes after many hours. when the system is hung, the keyboard stops working (can't switch to tty) though the mouse cursor moves over the still image. otherwise, the system continues to function normally (music continues to play, bluetooth works etc) and i see nothing relevant in journalctl
