Is there a way to edit a cell in place?

That is by double clicking on the cell, and inserting or modifying the characters where the cell is located in the grid?

Or do you always have to use the form-control input-sm to modify the contents?

I have not seen any way of doing this.

The closest is maybe UI formulas, e.g. http://sheet.cellmaster.com.au/example_autocomplete/app

Others http://sheet.cellmaster.com.au/examples

In fact I added custom code for UI elements so the cursor would work correctly.

Why do you want such a feature?

People who are used to use google sheets have complained me that ethercal is unusable because this feature does not exist.

Why do you want such a feature?

To edit in place, would allow for fewer clicks and mouse movement--just more efficient.

Yes, as @haivala indicates. Something similar to google docs.. video: https://www.dropbox.com/s/el8id1hr6twixv8/2020-08-18_08-34-30.mp4?dl=0
