look into offering @astropy.org email addresses to contributors
YES PLEASE
Hard to maintain with the turnover rate.
What about for voting members?
What is the benefit of such email address and does it outweigh the admin cost?
The metadata of each Git commit contains the e-mail address of the author and the committer (they can be the same person). The e-mail address I've been using for my commits is the one my university gave me, but this address has already changed because the Faculty of Science here reorganized its departments, and in any case I can't use my Lund University e-mail address after my PhD studies have ended. The e-mail address of a contributor can be retroactively changed by editing the .mailmap file of a Git repository, but the more repositories someone has contributed to, the more .mailmap files should be updated. Having an @astropy.org email address would allow me to keep using the same e-mail address for my commits regardless of where I happen to be employed at.
But if one uses this account (either voluntarily or got hacked) for nefarious purpose or in a way that violate the code of conducts, is Astropy legally responsible?
I have no idea what the admin burden of managing these email addresses would be, nor do I know anything about any legal ramifications.
I will re-open based on your request but I think this needs some serious thoughts.
