Losing the pure requirement (selectively) does seem like a good option maybe we could have a plugin.call_state or call_mut or something

I tried two readers and I stopped my investigation there, do we have an evidence of a reader handling it correctly? Would it look okay printed?
Also, unrelated but in the webapp this takes 9 seconds to compile on firefox :eyes:

You could really merge all @SUPERCILEX PR's first and let me solve the conflicts, it's really no bother.
