by the way, with composer, it's uninstalling the files and folder and reinstall them in good place. In this case it will work. With MagentoConnect, I don't know
In fact, I have a conflict with your extension and because it's located in the local folder, it prevents me to find a proper solution to fix the conflict.

About breakage: simple, fork a new module and drop support of this one (or continue it).
