What is the purpose of fotorama--hidden

I was debugging a case in which I was unable to drag and drop the Fotorama element using native DnD. I pinpointed this to the fotorama--hidden element being present.

Now I know what causes it I am looking for a fix. However I am unable to find what the purpose is of this element. It is not referenced in the source in any meaningfull way as far as I can see.

Thus: what is the purpose of the .fotorama--hidden div.

+1 .fotorama--hidden div prevents to trigger :active state on some elements.
