Linking shorthand?

Is there anything in the markdown spec that would make it easier to link to a person in a document? For example

NOTES.md

# Notes

## Fri Jan 27
Had a meeting with [[People#John]]

PEOPLE.md

# People

## John

Is there any way to reduce [[People#John]] to something easier to deal with like [[John]]? Just looking for ideas and strategies here.
