Enhancement: Reconsider Accessions module columns/sort options in the UI

Open ravengermain opened this issue 6 months ago • 2 comments

In AtoM's user interface, the Accessions module (under Manage > Accessions) displays and allows sorting for the following four fields: Accession number, Title, Acquisition date, and Updated.

These fields do not provide enough information do be able to sort effectively for organizations that have hundreds of accessions to scroll through from a single transferring body. It would be useful to include "Dates of Creation" and "Extent" in this table (and in the sort options) as well.

Hi @ravengermain, my organization uses the accession module quite heavily as well and I agree the accession module could use some improvement with respect to the admin user experience. I was curious about this issue and had a couple questions regarding sorting to open the discussion:

  1. An accession may have multiple "Creation" events (see the screenshot below). How would you expect the sorting filter to work for accessions with multiple creation events? (i.e., just consider the first event, consider the earliest date of all creation events, ...)

  1. Follow-up: where in the sorting order would you put accessions that do not have a creation date?
  2. Extent is a free-text field, I'm not sure how useful it would be to sort on this field. Do you have a specific use case in mind for that?

I have created a request that dovetails with this one by coming at from a different entry point, namely faceting rather than the sort options: Enhancement: Introduction of facets to Browse accessions display #2159
