Dashboard seems to show pageviews instead of unique visitors?

Hi, I'm having some difficulty figuring out how to see unique visitors on the dashboard instead of pageviews.

As an example, I tested this by being the first visitor to my site today:

• Prior to my visit, the dashboard showed 0 visits.
• I visited 5 pages on my site. The dashboard now says "5 out of 5 visits shown" under the "Pages" section, and "5 visits" under the "Totals" section.
• Desired view: See that there has been 1 unique visitor today.

I've confirmed that the "Sessions" checkbox is checked under the Data Collection settings.

It seems like this topic has been discussed and solved already (#542, #471, commit b9afc61, release v2.4.0), so maybe there's just a setting or number somewhere that I am missing or misunderstanding?
