FWIW, Thunderbird just got [an implementation of this](https://mailarchive.ietf.org/arch/msg/mailmaint/n8A31LXuskGPDUmFE_rnB1Dc-b4/). It can now archive messages automatically when (in Devise's case) the password link grows stale, or even delete the messages.
