Fluid vs Responsive

Have been working with this theme for a couple of days and have come across some unexpected behaviour. I've realised that this comes from the fact that the theme is fluid, with a max width, as opposed to fixed + 'responsive' (using row-fluid rather than row for example). My instinct is to strip out all the fluid classes, but thought I'd ask if there is a reason it has been done this way / any reason I shouldn't?
