Merge down problem with normal and height blending

Merging down a topmost layer, with a black mask and unchecked normal and height blending, has an unexpected result. In addition, if the mask wasn't applied before merging then undo freezes Armorpaint and I have to shut it down.
Here is an example. Top most layer has a black mask.

Strange result after merging..
Before merging, height calculation seems to be from the default level. After merging the height of the topmost layer it looks like it is calculated above everything else. I don't know if this is normal behavior. Maybe the user should have a choice how merging should affect height..?
