Any recent .skp files exported from Sketchup web ver - sketchup importer is not importing skp files into blender
Describe the bug Any file created from December 4th 2024 through now, sketchup importer is not importing skp files into blender. When I go back to import files I created on Dec 1st 2024 they import with no issue. Any after that will not work. I've removed my plugin and reinstalled, still not working. I've removed my blender and reinstalled and still not work for me.
To Reproduce Steps to reproduce the behavior: I follow the same steps with all my exports
- Start on Sketchup web version either paid subscription or free. Go to Download - SKP - Save to computer
- Open Blender go to file - Import .SKP and I look for the download
- Import - Any file from Dec 1st and previously will load fine, while any file I created after does not work. Blender is blank like it didn't even try to load the file. I don't even get errors.
Expected behavior I've been using this awesome plugin for two years. I usually download the skp file from the sketchup web version and import my scene into blender. I was just using it on Dec 1st but after that Dec 4th files and on aren't loading.
Screenshots I would but blender is blank when I try to load the recent files. So not sure if that will be helpful to you. To test I've taken the same model that is loading perfectly and redownloaded it from sketchup and tried to import and it's not working. Which made me understand it's only happening to newer files.
System Info
- Operating System: Windows 10 (Will be switching to Windows 11 soon, since windows 10 will not be supported in the new year)
- Blender Version - I've tried a few with the same issue happening - 3.3, 4.2 and 4.3 all are official releases
- SketchUp Version - Web version both free and paid membership still gives me this issue
- Importer Version - v0.23.2
Additional context None
Happy to find I'm not the only one with the issue : I have the same exact issue with Blender 4.3 / Importer v0.23.2 (also tried Blender 4.2)
A skp file I made on Dec 1st is loaded correctly. A skp file made today based on the exact same model is not loaded A skp file made today with just a cube is not loaded either.
Hope someone can find how to fix it, as this skp importer is very useful !
I'm having the same problem. I heavily rely on SketchUp as my preferred modelling program and as of now, can't use the SKP importer since nothing will show up after an import. I hope there's a solution for this soon.
The Issue I believe is a change in the stated version that Sketchup uses to save files. I used a different plugin to try and import a saved free version SKP file into SU 2017 and this is what it reported:
So it looks like on or about Dec 4, 2024 SU switched over to using save files with 2025 versioning.
Ugh, what a bummer!
I hope this importer will be updated to import this new kind of SKP files, please.
In the same boat. After several troubleshooting attempts I suddenly remembered that I had updated my SketchUp to the latest maintenance release (from 24.0.553 to 24.0.594) a few days ago, then Google brought me here. It's curious that it wasn't even a point update (like from v2023 to v2024) that messed with it.
Anyways, I don't have much hope of seeing any updates to this plugin unfortunately, but in the meantime here's a workaround: There's a free little program (from the well-known plugin maker S4U, so it should be trustworthy) that can save v2025 skp files in earlier formats, here. If you save your files using that, this importer can still open them as usual.

Hey Thanks for the workaround but I have a question for you. I tried to use this and I'm stuck on waiting... do we need to have this saved to our computer a certain way?

Not that I'm aware, maybe try running it as admin? I just downloaded the zip, unzipped, then ran the exe. Files around 250mb takes about a minute to save as another version.
