You can review this Arabic word list. It is a word frequency dictionary I built from the movie subtitles. Maybe you can suggest any other source of such a word list. Or maybe you can review the spreadsheet, clean it up from bad words, borrowed words, names (personal, geographical, etc).

After I wrote my first comment, I noticed that you had already added it 😅. I am currently testing it. Thank you!! I'd be really happy to help with the dictionary. Do you have a written guideline for choosing words that I could follow?

@aziz-marashly The instructions are simple. Please review at least 3000 words. Please remove (cross out, set count to zero, blank it, whatever) any obviously profane, obscene, vulgar words. And also any triggering words, such as "rape", "murder", etc. I believe there will be a few borrowed words and names. If you have passion and energy, I believe it is better to remove these as well.

@aradzie I did about the first 2300-ish words. I also used the search to find bad words. The problem is that the list of words has a lot of spelling issues. I'm thinking about another source that is already audited for spelling mistakes. Let me think about this and get back to you. I have a question regarding scoring, how this score is calculated, and how this score is being used in the application.

@aziz-marashly Thanks for reviewing it. I understand it might be not the most exciting job, especially given the low quality of the list. It was my first naive attempt to build such a list. However, not being a native speaker makes it much more difficult for me.

I have updated the website with the result of your work. Previously we had about 500 Arabic words from some random list that I found on the Internet. Now we have ~2100 such words from the spreadsheet reviewed by you, much better.

If you think that you can obtain a better word list, go ahead. If you think that the current list is good enough, that's also ok, maybe we can close this issue.

However, there are about 120k headwords, and each headword can have different suffixes, prefixes and diacritics (also known as harakat) to have tens of different meanings, for example, the headword حمل can have about 20 different variations and 102 different meanings.

Adding a list of 12.3m words would be quite a challenge, and unnecessary, as native Arabic speakers don't add diacritics to words, we can just easily understand which exact meaning out of tens of meanings the word is implying for without even thinking about it, we only use diacritics when we don't want to leave any room for error or misunderstanding a word, such as in the Quran, but it's quite a challenge for non-native speakers to read and understand Arabic without diacritics, so for now we can have a list of 120k headwords without diacritics, and then potentially add an option in the settings to enable harakat in the future, which expands the list to 12.3m words.

So here are a few sources for those 120k headwords:

• Lisan Al-Arab

But it's still going to be a challenge, as you need to get this list from pdf files or online dictionaries, so we can limit this list to the Quranic Arabic Corpus, Lemma Frequency and Verb Concordance, which is 3680 words and 1475 verbs used in the Quran (along with their frequencies), which is read by all Muslims worldwide, and use this tool to remove the diacritics from words. We can also limit this list even further to 1500 common words in Modern Standard Arabic from Almaany and use the same tool.

So we have two options:

1. Modern Standard Arabic, with ~120k headwords, used by 274m people.
2. Quranic Arabic, with 3.7k words and 1.5k verbs, used by 1.907b people.

I believe the best option we can use is the words and verbs from the Quran, then expand to Modern Standard Arabic in the future.

I wanted to report a small typographical issue in the Arabic touchtyping lessons. When training with punctuation characters lessons are using the English comma (,) instead of the Arabic comma (،).

Here’s a detailed explanation of how each comma is obtained when using an Arabic keyboard layout:

English Comma (,) (wrongly used): On an Arabic keyboard layout, the English comma (,) is obtained by pressing Shift + و or the < key.

Arabic Comma (،): The correct Arabic comma (،) is obtained by pressing Shift + ن or Shift + K.

This issue can cause confusion for users learning to type in Arabic, and correcting it would greatly enhance the accuracy and user experience of the Arabic lessons.
