The latest release (v1.1.19) now allows certificate files to be loaded for MQTT. See https://github.com/arachnetech/homebridge-mqttthing/blob/v1.1.19/docs/Configuration.md#mqtt-settings for details.

It's a real pain finding these options. I think --insecure might be equivalent to the checkServerIdentity(servername, cert) setting in described in https://nodejs.org/api/tls.html#tls_tls_connect_options_callback - unless you can see another option there...

I think you're seeing the retain flag for the [LWT message](https://www.hivemq.com/blog/mqtt-essentials-part-9-last-will-and-testament/) (configured in `"will"`), not the retain flag used for publishing standard messages for the accessory?
