Closing/re-opening to kick-start CI. This looks generally good to me, but someone like @betodealmeida might be more qualified to scrutinize the db engine spec.

@allen-chang this seems to need a rebase, otherwise we would have merged it. Hoping we can get it across the finish line!

Hmm... I don't think the rebase went as planned. Rebasing on current master will hopefully clear up all the files/commits seen here.
