Crashes sometimes

Open n-o-o-b opened this issue 7 years ago • 9 comments

Clicking some links causes the browser to crash. For example, brave.com -> Github link at the bottom. It's a shame, since this is a lightweight FOSS browser that has a nicer design than "FOSS Browser" from F-Droid, but it looks like I'll have to change to another browser until this is fixed.

I have found that by long pressing on the selection, and then selecting 'open in new tab' (the first option) it will work as intended.

Kind of a pain to remember, when we are used to just touching and having it work.

I too hope that this issue can be addressed.

Hope the 'long press' method works fo you!

@n-o-o-b , FOSS Browser is developing, the Lightning is not.

ildar avatar Dec 04 '18 04:12 ildar

@puppykickr That's not really good enough. I have since switched to Firefox as my one and only browser. @ildar I hope that both can continue to be developed.

Then I dont know what else to tell you. I told you how I made it work. It takes a little getting used to, but it will work.

Are you really going to give up just because of a ~½ second long press and a click?

Think of that the next time you have to enter 'Settings' then scroll all the way down to the bottom to touch 'Exit' just to exit out of FireFox.

I will tell you that FireFox was the reason why I switched to Lightning in the first place.

No browser is perfect, they all have bugs.

FoxFox, for me, got worse with each update, and at last was crashing all the time even just going into the settings.

Not to mention that it is slower than molassass in Alaska during winter.

Or having to go deep into the settings to clear your download history. (Why does it even store that?!?)

Or having to download ad-ons (that slow the app down even more) just to block ads.

I did go and try out that FOSS browser, and it is OK... but

I don't like the search bar near the bottom, the annoying navigation button, the bookmark system, or how it doesn't have tracking blocking as an option.

I have to use Lightning to do that. In fact, I am even using the 'Bare Bones' version as a default browser on my device.

I use both apps for different things.

So good luck with FireFox, I have tried about 50 or so browsers and none hold a candle to Lightning.

I have over 150 bookmarks, and can run over 20 open tabs with Lightning on a $40 2GB phone.

Try that with FireFox.

If you want lite and fast, and slightly similar to Lightning, you can try DuckDuckGo, they have revamped their old browser, and it is totally different from what it used to be.

It is on both F-Droid and Google Play.

When I tried it out awhile back, it was just a bit slower than Lightning, and had some other limitations as well.

At least it will block tracking like Lightning does.

I, for one, am staying with Lightning, as I have tried the rest and always found more than a few reasons to continue using Lightning.

The 'Bare Bones' version is great as a default browser (small, quick, and one touch exit), and the newest edition is quite amazing for everything else I need.

I now find that I am so accustomed to long pressing my selections that I sometimes find myself doing it in other apps when I don't need to.🤣

I set up androids for other people, and Lightning is one of the apps that I always include.

I'm glad it works for you. The browser crashing when a link is clicked is a significant enough bug for me to not want to use it.

I don't like to have lots of tabs open, and I have my browser set to clear all history when I press "Quit" (or long-press back and press "Close all tabs" on Lightning). I was already using Firefox as a secondary browser, because I wanted 2 browsers with 2 different search engines (Google and DuckDuckGo). But now I've switched to just using Firefox, and it's working for me. Plus, I can use all my extensions, like Dark Background & Light Text.

I agree with you that FOSS browser has a somewhat unusual and at times annoying design, especially coming from browsers with the address bar at the top and because it has that floating button. However, as I said, I hope that both it and Lightning continue to be developed, and I wish both projects luck. I might look into DuckDuckGo browser but I think I'll be staying with FF.

Try using Bare Bones Lightning (old version) for Google. You can also get google weather, maps, etc. right from the homepage.

If youre using Google you are not worried about security anyway.

Under settings in Lightning, select DuckDuckGo as the search engine.

Then enter the homepage selection and choose 'web page'.

Copy and paste this:

https://duckduckgo.com/?kae=t&kp=-2&kz=-1&kav=1&kn=1&kk=-1&kaj=u&kam=osm&kv=-1&kak=-1&kax=-1&kaq=-1&kap=-1&kao=-1&kau=-1&kg=p&k5=1&kac=-1&k1=-1

This will give you very nice dark theme settings, and a streamlined experience on Lightning.

You can also use it on Bare Bones Lightning as the homepage. (Save the Google homepage as a bookmark for when you want it.)

This will allow you to clear the cookies and still maintain your DuckDuckGo settings.

I use Bare Bones Lightning as the default browser, and Lightning as my main browser.

I also will continue messing around with FOSS, and I also figured out how to put the same settings into it as well.

I feel it just isnt as secure as Lightning is. And backing out of ads is next to impossible, normally forcing me to start a search all over again.

Try going into the settings on your device and shortening the time for the long press. I believe that mine can go down to ⅓ second.

It really is not that big of a deal, especially when you consider how painfully slow FireFox is.

I think my ol'ladys' laptop using FireFox is still trying to load images on a website from a search she started last year...

@n-o-o-b @ildar

Hey, everyone.

I found a solution, or at least a partial one.

Someone on another thread mentioned that if you simply go into the app settings and turn off 'allow sites to open new tabs/windows' it stops crashing when selecting links.

I have just started testing this, but so far it seems to work well.

puppykickr avatar Dec 30 '18 01:12 puppykickr

+1

Work around mentioned above works so this issue is related to links that opens a new browser window.

However it would be nice if links would actually open to a new tab without hard crashing

I have discovered that the copycat versions of Lightning are not available on Google Play anymore.

LiteSpeed has disappeared all together, but I did find Stealth on APKPure.

But be aware.

Although Stealth does not have the issues with crashing, it does have at least three (3) trackers, and Autofill, which never worked right and is a guess as for security.
