Cannot download anything (?)

Open Stanzi97 opened this issue 7 years ago • 16 comments

I'm unable to download e.g. images by long-pressing and selecting "download" on my Fairphone 2 (rooted, Android 5.1 with XPosed). The Download App says "waiting to download", but nothing happens.

I also observe downloads don't work using 4.4.1 and 4.4.2 from the Fdroid repos on my stock phone with Android 6.0.1. A toast message appears announcing the download and, for the first attempt, a failed notification appears but in subsequent attempts the notification is instantly dismissed. It didn't help to change the download location.

I don't recall being prompted to grant permission to file storage so I wonder if it's unable to save the downloaded file.

I also have the same problem

I'm fairly sure I managed to fix this by using the settings menu to trigger the 'local storage' permission prompt, then granting access. I think I just changed the download location.. or maybe I tried to export bookmarks..

So... Download is working now??

Oh ok sorry for opening the issue... The problem occured due to my own fault. I disabled background data for the Download app, so it wasn't able to download. Sorry for that!

I have the same issue. Lightning 4.5.1,

I can't download anything, download path is default internal storage, and change path didn't solve it. I can successfully export my bookmarks.

And, I have com.android.providers.downloads and com.android.providers.downloads.ui, and I didn't limit their background data.

My system: Sony Xperia XZ2, stock android 9.0, non-rooted. I do disable the Chrome app because I don't need it. Default browser is Lightning.

@ctytoby

Have you gone to: (Your OS may be a bit different)

Settings Apps Lightning Browser

(select it)

Permissions Storage (turn it on)

puppykickr avatar Aug 19 '19 18:08 puppykickr

@puppykickr

Yes, there are only 2 permissions and both are on (allowed).

@ctytoby

Then I would suggest using an alternate means to download.

There are a few very nice options that I employ myself.

All are able to be accessed via the 'share' feature on Lightning.

'Share' can be accessed by long pressing a photo (just like you were going to download it) or by the three dot menu icon in the upper right.

The apps I recommend are:

Download Navigator (F-Droid, no ads)

Video Downloder (UpToDown, unobtrusive one page ads)

ADM (Automatic Download Manager) (UptoDown, unobtrusive one page ads)

GetThemAll (UpToDown, banner and occasional unobtrusive one page ads)

Unobtrusive ads means that an immediate 'X' out is available.

All of these have different capabilities.

They are all small enough that all can go onto even a 1GB device at the same time.

If you like Lightning, then you will really like VideoDownloader, as the UI is almost identical.

@puppykickr

Ah, Download Navi is the one I'm looking for. I tried search "download" in FDroid but it's a long list and I missed this app.

Anyway with this I can download. Thanks.

@ctytoby

Keep the others in mind as well, as I have found that each has limitations that validate the use of the others.

I have the same problem when backing up the bookmarks. I'm not given the option to choose how or where to backup the bookmarks. I just get an error "Sorry bookmarks could not be exported".

Where are the book supposed to be exported to?

@jhoc2000 Mine always go to the Downloads folder.

puppykickr avatar Feb 25 '20 05:02 puppykickr

Should do on mine but there's nothing there.
