Python 3 support

Running 2to3 over the code I only found 2 lines of code which needed to be refactored to make the codebase python 3 compatible (see https://github.com/chrsintyre/chalk). Is there something more complicated I'm not seeing?

This is blocking the hendrix port to Python 3. @chrsintyre, can you turn your fix into a Pull Request?
