[BUG]: Widget doesn't always display card number

  • [X] This issue is not a duplicate

What are the steps to reproduce this bug?

  • I go through all of my cards on day 1, so when I close the app, I don't have a number indicated on the widget.
  • When a day 2 starts, the widget appears, still without any indication of the cards I have left to do.
  • I have to open the app once for the widget to update and display "35" cards left in "10" minutes.

Expected behaviour

Before the last updates, I would have the number of cards for the day indicated on the widget every morning, even without opening the app.

Actual behaviour

I need to open the app once to fetch the number of cards I need to study on a given day.

This is the only regression I've noticed since the updates. Good job to the dev team!

Hello! 👋 Thanks for logging this issue. Please remember we are all volunteers here, so some patience may be required before we can get to the issue. Jumping on to say I'm also experiencing this since the latest updates. I've tried re-adding the widget and ensuring that AnkiDroid isn't being restricted in battery usage, but it seems that the widget usually won't update until you open the app.

Also parroting LouBtl to say thanks to the devs...outside of this minor issue, the updates are working wonderfully!

Pixel 5, Android 13, AnkiDroid 2.16.5.

Just to update, this seems to work on and off depending on my OS version. Probably not a priority for the Dev team, I suggest we close this issue. Good work on the app as always 🙏

I'd like this fixed (thanks for the report, and for the thank you!)

There's quite some pressure to get 2.17 out, but we've got a number of backend breakages to handle and limited dev time. Once these are handled and 2.17 is out, we can shift our focus back to issues which were introduced in 2.16

Hi, my widget hasn't been updating itself the way it used to for about a month. Here's the rough timeline of my experience with this:

  • always worked great
  • 2.17 made the widget disappear
  • the widget was restored, but now did not update itself unless I manually opened the app
  • it worked properly again after an update
  • sometime in early April the widget stopped updating itself, and has been in this state ever since

OS: Android 10

Looking forward to this getting resolved, the widget showing me how many cards I have due every day is a big part of what keeps me on track.

Cheers, and thanks for all the hard work!

Edit with update

After a phone restart, the widget seems to be updating itself again.

Hi, back with another update - after my previous edit, the widget functioned properly for a few days but has since stopped updating itself again. It only updates when I manually navigate inside the app itself. Phone restart has not solved it.
