You can mount smb or NFS in file managers like material files or mixplorer and you can open it in nextplayer

This is not really the same thing as having inbuilt SMB support...I don't want to have to go through all those extra UI gestures to watch a video, especially when I'm watching multiple short clips in succession on my Google TV, which is how I mainly use the app.
I'm willing to spend some time developing this feature if you would be willing and able to provide timely answers to any questions that I may have.
But if this is really something that you are not interested in supporting, I completely understand as it is your app of course 😊
@kenny1983 it's a good feature but currently it's not the priority. There are so many features pending and first i need to work on those first. if you would like to implement this go ahead. But i can only be available to work the app on weekends only so can't expect timely replys

You should use https://github.com/nova-video-player/aos-AVP for this.

Voting in favour. Nova player looks very dated now, I don't like the interface at all (in contrast to next player!)

Nova is going to get a design refresh and I don't think Next Player is going to become a media center-type player. You might as well use Nova if you need SMB connectivity now.
