How do we know what to place in our component directives array?

With materialDirectives now deprecated is there a list of exactly what to place in our directives array for a given component? Other than looking at the examples, there doesn't seem to be a definitive list of what to use when.

What is your process for choosing components to use in your application?

I've been wondering what I can do to make this process more clear. The most basic response is, for any selector that you add to your template you must add the directive/component that defined the selector.
