What problem is this PR trying to solve?

It looks like the only substantial change is that the class attribute isn't being placed on the CM element. It would probably make more sense to merge them, instead of ignore them completely.

Since this breaks behavior that is explicitly tested for, we should probably just close this unless OP can explain why this change is beneficial.
