Graphics crash or what

I have an i5 desktop machine that seems to crash as soon as android-x86 tries to do graphics more complex than terminal emulator or settings. The logical file here shows it happen when trying to open chrome. Chrome starts up, starts getting a page, at about the time it should be rendering something, a pop-up indicating Chrome has crashed appears and then Android freezes. also attached are a dmesg run after the reboot that followed the above crash. Also included is a photo of the screen showing About the Tablet.

Probably a red herring but at boot time the kernel complains about microcode being out of date. I was able to update the microcode for the ubuntu install on this machine but I don't see any way to do it for Android. Ubuntu doesn't have the above problem.
