Better subscripts

I need to find an easier was to write subscripts than, for example

La<sub>2-x</sub>Sr<sub>x</sub>CuO<sub>4</sub>

The tricky thing is to keep away from interfering with mathjax.

These are the same as Pandoc's, so it seems to be somewhat standard notation
