Not always activating

Open bwray opened this issue 3 years ago • 3 comments

Not sure if this is a selfcontrol bug, or an auto-selfcontrol bug so I'm posting it in both repos. Auto-self control often won't automatically activate on the schedule I have set up (single blacklist). When the sites on my blacklist are not being blocked in the scheduled time and I go to open the selfcontrol app it reports that it's stuck and requires me to stop it manually. Except, that it's not really stuck since all of the websites in my blacklist are accessible in firefox.

After this all happens, if I enter 'auto-selfcontrol activate' during a time scheduled for blocking, selfcontrol starts right up and is blocking my blacklist.

I'm running macOS 10.15.5, and I recently got the updated version of both selfcontrol (3.0.1) and auto-selfcontrol

I'm seeing something similar:

  • macOS 10.15.7, SelfControl 4.0.2 and auto-selfcontrol 2.0.3
  • no blocking happens unless I run auto-selfcontrol activate during a time scheduled for blocking. Even then, it only happens during the current scheduled block and not during the next (so auto-selfcontrol is currently not giving me any benefit over just running SelfControl manually)
  • in my case, SelfControl does not report that it is stuck. Rather, it shows the honest truth: not blocking when nothing is being blocked and remaining time if a block is active. It behaves the same regardless of whether I run auto-selfcontrol activate or just press the button in the SelfControl app.

If I can provide any information that might help to diagnose this, please let me know.

I have the same issue. I am trying auto-selfcontrol for the first time today, and it only starts a block if I run auto-selfcontrol activate during the block time, and as with @jgonggrijp, after doing one block it will not roll on and start the next scheduled block (unless I run auto-selfcontrol activate again during the next block period).

I'm running the latest versions of SelfControl and auto-selfcontrol on macOS 12.0.1 on an M1 MacBook Pro.

I have the same issue.

it will only activate if I trigger auto-selfcontrol activate if we are inside a block. Doing it before it never activates the block.
