Power surge destroyed SATA to USB converter on my WD Mybook

I would really appreciate some help please. I removed my HDD from the case and popped it into an enclosure I bought. Only problem is that the drive wants to be formatted but I CANNOT lose all my data on this drive. I had purchased an identical hard drive of the same make and model, to swap the SATA to USB converter but that did not work either. I downloaded Linux onto a virtual machine but have no idea how to use the operating system at all. Could someone PLEASE give me a step by step for recovering my data off this encrypted drive. The model is WCC4E7ZYC52T
