4tb mybook wdfjk0020hbk-04 please help!
i believe the power supply of my mybook 4tb has failed as it no longer powers on.
i've mounted it internally on my mac and it is showing:
see attached images of the usb bridge.
so, to my question...
is the asmedia chip the one that provides the encryption?
is it possible for me to simulate this chip so i can get at my information?
i'm not a coder or programmer by any stretch of the imagination but can follow instructions very well :)
i have over 10 years of work stored on this HDD as i used it when moving between computers, any help getting back my files would be incredibly appreciated.
my PN and SN attached below..
If I recall correctly... The asmedia chip is not encrypting (could be wrong) but I think the issue is that your mac is seeing it as a 2tb drive... Shop around and see if you can find a usb adapter that supports 3tb or higher..and that may solve the issue...or...purchase another power adapter of the same model ..little adapter should have a part number on it..match that up.
@Maddoc
Do you recall the encryption status of the asmedia chip?

Disregard my last post...about the 2.tb. Thing...I just saw your screen shots closer...you are detecting 4tb...
by any chance you had a smartware password enabled?

no password, i believe the usb bridge from the external case contains a hardware encryptor that is preventing me from simply turning this once external HDD into an internal one and keeping my files accessible. forgive me if i'm repeating things that have already been solved, i'm not fluent in the language found on this lovely forum :-/
No apologies necessary....the mad doc might be more helpful in this case ..lets wait for his input

also FYI i'm currently running mac osx and as i type this am making it dual boot to linux too as i believe this is needed to decrypt?
i patiently await the word of the mad doc.
I really can't add anything. The ASM chip is not known to do any encryption. I think I remember that sometimes it uses the wrong block size, and that can confuse the operating system. Can you dump the MBR? Use this command in a terminal window (the Terminal app is in Applications in a folder called Utilities):
dd if=/dev/disk0 count=1 | hexdump -Cv
I used "disk0" because that's where your screenshot says it is. (leave off the "s1") If successful, paste the output into a comment.

permission denied
Put sudo in front of the command:
sudo dd if=/dev/disk0 count=1 | hexdump -Cv

FYI under drive info it is now listed as disk1 not disk0 so amended the code accordingly
OK, so you can read the disk.
Can you please copy and paste the output as TEXT into a comment? I just don't think I want to type all that in. Then I can dump the partition table and see what's going on.
of course, thank you mad doctor!
Caspars-iMac:~ casparbucknall$ sudo dd if=/dev/disk1 count=1 | hexdump -Cv

So it thinks that 4TB is 2 billion blocks, so a block is 2048 bytes. Usually it is 512 bytes. This is probably why the Mac doesn't find the partition.
If you boot into Ubuntu, you should be able to fix it by just writing a new partition table. Do sudo fdisk /dev/sdX where X is the correct thing for the WD disk. Be careful-- if you choose the wrong disk, you will screw up the data on it. Fdisk is driven with user input. Hit 'm' + return for the help menu. You want to delete the current partition (d), then create a new one (n) as a primary partition that starts at sector 2048 and ends at the default (the entire disk). Then write and exit (w). If there is an NTFS file system at sector 2048 (where they usually are), Ubuntu should recognize it automatically.
DO NOT FORMAT, even if the computer asks you to.
THANKS! I have a friend who is very familiar with Linux I’ll get him to help with the instructions. I’ll let you know what happens. Thanks again!!
