"permission denied" response in attempts to access old backup WD HDD

I'm surely not the only one who has made mention of this issue, and as a last resort I am hoping that this plea for help will assist in concluding all of this...

I am yet another victim of the WD encryption bs that since the utter destruction of the original SATA/USB bridge, (unbeknownst to me about the encryption before this purchase of a SATA>USB 3.0 adaptor) I have not had the luck and ease I thought I would have in accessing my files. Before I continue, I will mention this:

  1. The drive does work and Is surely not faulty. A few days ago I managed to secure the micro-usb port by simply pinching it on the electrical connections with everything plugged in. The drive booted with ease and I was able to see my files. I got the adaptor later and got rid of the original bridge thinking it may be useless once I had the connection. More or less, the data is there, and the drive does work.

  2. Before I have tried running this particular program through Go, I have attempted to run this drive with OS X, Linux and Windows 7 to which none initially were able to recognize the data on the drive. It would just denote "WDC disk drive", show the drive size, but everything otherwise unallocated and unaccessible. I don't believe that the SATA USB adaptor is faulty. I trust that it is in good standing otherwise, and yes it is a 3.5" and I do have the adaptor cable for it for an additional charge.

I've since stumbled upon this and tried it out. I've loaded up Go (using Linux) and have "reallymine" working. In attempting to decrypt the volume (or even accessing it at all via terminal by any means) I Get this message:

error running [command] : open /dev/sdb: permission denied

attempting to bypass via sudo, this message:

sudo: reallymine: command not found

Im not educated well with programming and the lot but I have learned very quickly. Any sort of advice or tips of how to potentially get around this and eventually decrypt this volume, or even just override the permissions somehow (if there Is another path that needs to be entered for the sudo decrypt, any guidance on how to do that can and will be greatly appreciated) or just anything that will allow me to get access to these files, would be utterly amazing.

Is there anyone out there willing to help me out here? Thank you in advance.

If you are not in the "disks" group, then you cannot access raw disks. Try it with admin privileges, i.e. as root.

Running in root, the command 'reallymine' suddenly is unrecognizable. Any way to change that?

Basically, root or su doesn't recognize the newly installed "reallymine" program. The command is recognized once I manage to type this into first logging into the terminal:

export PATH=$HOME/Go/bin:$PATH

is there something that I may have to input once I am in root that allows the "reallymine" command to be read?

Same thing, I guess.

If you are in the directory with the reallymine binary, just do ./reallymine.

That last part seems to have done it! Have it decrypting now.. just a matter of time to see the verdict of the image file. Thanks for the help!

If your chip was a Jmicron, then I would like a copy of your keyblock, please.

Can't say that it is, my friend.
