question about dependency updates

I am using branch-2.0.0 and I see it is using: Spark 2.0, Scala 2.10.6. java 1.7 (jre) java 1.6 (jdk) aws cli (0.? I forget which)

I spent a little bit of time trying to update java(1.8),scala(2.11),aws(1.10) libraries but didn't have much success after the upgrades... Just thought I'd log the request, and also see if anyone else had success with this.
