"project" is one of the words Knuth explicitly added to the exceptions list as unhyphenated because the hyphenation depends on whether it is a noun or a verb. He may not be right about that, but that is why it is like that in this module.

Project is indeed ['proj', 'ect'] as a noun and ['pro', 'ject'] as a verb.

Proselint should be able to detect this example among others (using more advanced features like textblob) which can then lead to generally better hyphenation (presumably this matters for more than just project, other words that can be both nouns and verbs might be able to be broken at the same points, but with different rankings on the priority of those points).
