KryptEY development status and upcoming updates

Open Alba32173 opened this issue 8 months ago • 14 comments

Hello KryptEY team!

I'd like to express my enthusiasm for this end-to-end encrypted keyboard app, which I find extremely promising. However, I noticed the last official update was from April 2023, and I haven't found any newer versions or news about new releases.

Reason for Inquiry

Security: For an app focused on encryption, regular maintenance and continuous improvements are key to ensuring that vulnerabilities don't emerge over time.

User Adoption: Many of us rely on KryptEY for private communications; having regular updates instills confidence and helps more people try it out.

New Features: It would be great to know if compatibility with recent Android versions, minor bug fixes, or community feedback are planned.

Specific Questions

Is KryptEY still under active development, or is the project in maintenance mode?

Is there a roadmap or approximate schedule for future releases?

Are you planning to release an update on Google Play and/or F-Droid soon?

I would greatly appreciate any details on the next steps of the project. I'm convinced that, with your work, KryptEY has the potential to become the de facto standard for encrypted keyboards on Android.

Thank you for your efforts, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Best regards.

Okay, thank you very much. How can I follow the project to be ready to download it when it is ready? Is it going to be Kryptey, the Extreme to Extreme encryption keyboard, but updated to 2025?

And will it be available on Google Play? There's no keyboard with end-to-end encryption on Google Play, so it would be great if there was one and it could be downloaded widely. I'm already writing to you using that keyboard; I used to have KryptEY.

@Alba32173 about playstore put on issues on the repo I shared ask for it thx

R00tedbrain avatar Jun 03 '25 10:06 R00tedbrain

@amnesica same question as in https://github.com/amnesica/ClearClipboard/issues/14 – but seeing you did not respond here, I assume the answer to both will be "unmaintained" and "no"? Here, the needed line breaks in fastlane full description would be before lines 4, 9, 25, 28, 35.

@R00tedbrain just in case: indirectly answering the question about stores: with this one here most likely dead, it seems you still maintain your fork. It would be the same lines there. If you want, we can take your fork into the IzzyOnDroid repo. We also offer independent RB confirmation, as I see your Readme mentioning that. Just let us know, and we'd take care for the inclusion (and would continue any discussion, should there be need for any, in your issue tracker of course).

For context: IzzyOnDroid is the second largest repository running with the F-Droid structures (i.e. fully compatible with F-Droid.org, but also independent from it). Other than F-Droid, we always ship the APKs built and signed by their resp. developers. Our own builds are only made to confirm the original ones were indeed built from the very source they claim to be built from. For some statistics, be welcome to https://stats.izzyondroid.org/ 😉

Hi @Alba32173, @R00tedbrain, @IzzySoft,

sorry for the late reply. I have plans for the further development of KryptEY, including some issues here, but not enough time in the near future to implement them. Unfortunately, until then there will be no more updates of this app.

@R00tedbrain Cool, to see a fork 🙂 If you used code from KryptEY please put a link somehwere 🙂

@IzzySoft, do the required changes also apply for F-Droid or are those only requiered for the IzzyOnDroid repo?

They'd be automatically applied at F-Droid, too. And I take best care to keep them compatible (I was responsible for their metadata for long enough to hopefully know how they work 😉) And to show you the difference, here's how it would currently render:

and here's how it would look with the improvements I suggest (as currently implemented with IzzyOnDroid):

Hi! I've given you the mentions, and I'll also add links to make it clearer! If you need any help, here I am. My version is stable and working. I had a lot of trouble uploading it, and I'm busy too. But it worked well, and many people installed it.

@IzzySoft If the previous author doesn't mind, we'd be delighted to have our fork in your repository.

@R00tedbrain Yes sure, you can put it into IzzyOnDroid. If I have time, I will come back to you if I have questions :)
