Feature Request: SteamOS & Windows clients for hand held PCs

Open ronoverdrive opened this issue 2 years ago • 4 comments

Would be fun to have a client for Windows and SteamOS/Linux so we can turn portable PCs like the Steam Deck and ASUS Rog Ally into clients for wired headsets llike the Valve Index and Vive headset to make them wireless without expensive specialized addons. All these handhelds are capable of in-home streaming either directly in Steam or through Moonlight/Sunshine and support hardware accelerated video decoding.

this is not the place for support please create your own issue and go through everything, moving on While that does seem possible it's not going to be easy as your going to need a x86 decoder for both Linux and Windows (if you wanted both) and also do a few more things anyway the point is this isn't happening anytime soon

As far as the decoder is concerned the main one that I'm aware of that can be built with hardware acceleration support on all platforms is FFMpeg. Its also capable of low-latency encoding as its used in Sunshine for low latency game streaming.

Of course I'm not expecting this to happen over night, but I wanted to get a feature request out there so its at least known there's an interest for this.

Bumping on this. ALXR has a client for Linux/Windows but I haven’t tried how good it is.
